Oral contraceptives, often called birth control pills or "the pill," are hormonal medications taken by mouth to prevent pregnancy. They work by inhibiting ovulation and preventing sperm from reaching the egg. There are two main types: combination pills (containing estrogen and progestin) and progestin-only pills (minipill).
